The AFSC sale committee plans and manages ongoing fundraising sales for the American Friends Service Committee, continuing the foundational work of our long-time member Beth Binford. Sales are currently held quarterly in March, June, September and December, with the largest sale of the year in December.

Through collections from meeting members and some outside sources, including Kendall/Crosslands, the Subcommittee strives to recycle and reuse discarded items to raise money for AFSC. See www.afsc.org

“From their origins as a swap table in the late 1960s, the “Recycle Sales” which benefit AFSC have grown through a “tangled web of connections and efforts,” according to Beth Binford. Beth, the spiritual engine behind the sales, retired from AFSC in 1994 and has been leading the effort ever since. The sales are made possible by dedicated volunteers, many of whom have been involved with the operation for more than 20 years. Beth says the sales, hosted at Gwynedd Friends Meeting in Pennsylvania and at area Quaker retirement centers, result in some $20,000 each year, with the highest total being $32,000. Over the years, more than $500,000 has been raised for AFSC programs—an impressive amount by any standard!”

Members and attenders of Gwynedd Friends Meeting and others, including members and attenders of other meetings and practices, who wish to participate in the work of the Subcommittee are welcome and encouraged to join in this meaningful work. Please contact Chris Mrozinski

 
AFSC SALE DONATION GUIDELINES (updated on 10/6/2023)
 
To Our Valued Contributors….         
 
We thought it might be useful to provide a list of items which we ask  not be contributed.  We understand that people hesitate to throw out items that may still be of some use, but our customers are getting more and more choosey about what they are willing to purchase. For that reason, we spend quite a few volunteer hours sorting through and disposing of things that experience has shown us have no chance of being sold.
 
We hope that the following list will be helpful.
 
Please do not contribute:
  • Mattresses and bed frames 
  • Clothing or linens which are pilled, torn, faded or have holes or a musty smell 
  • Cassettes and videotapes 
  • Books, with the exception of cookbooks (for any sale) and “coffee table” books in excellent condition for the Holiday Sale 
  • Chipped or cracked dishware, ceramics, decorative items, and glassware 
  • Electronics with frayed wires, missing wiring or missing parts 
  • Loose batteries 
  • TVs 
  • Personal care items or cosmetics which are old or opened 
  • Any kind of helmets

Note: Because of the amount of work necessary to prepare for the sales, we really can’t accept items on the day before (Friday) or the day of the sale (Saturday). There simply isn’t enough time to process these donations.  We understand that there may be special circumstances that make it necessary to bring items on those days, but please contact Chris Mrozinski in advance so that the team knows that there will be last-minute deliveries.
