Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)
Who are we?
Gwynedd Friends Meeting of Quakers is a community of about 150 active attenders of diverse ages, ethnicities, occupations, and spiritual backgrounds. We come together to worship and practice the testimonies of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Stewardship.
How do we worship?
We worship in silence and stillness awaiting a Spirit led message to guide our life. If the message from the Divine compels us to share it, we feel pushed to our feet and speak the message briefly and clearly. The community receives the message and takes several minutes to listen to it deeply before any other message is given.
We neither rise to agree nor disagree with messages or tell of our own experience. We just listen deeply. Sometimes, a message is for us alone and we continue in silence.
Sunday worship lasts about an hour and ends when the head of Meeting stands to shake hands and encourages us to greet one another. This is followed by about 10-15 minutes of announcements. Visitors are then encouraged to stay for fellowship in the community room or for a program when they occur. [Learn More]
Are visitors welcome?
Yes, please join us for worship, Sunday classes, and activities. Quakers welcome people of all ages, religious backgrounds, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and gender identities.
Worship is available, on site or via Zoom, Sunday mornings before 9:30 for about an hour, and Wednesday nights, on Zoom only, at 8:00 to about 8:30-9PM.
Arrive ten to fifteen minutes or so before worship time. There will be people at the door to welcome you and guide you to the worship room. Take any seat away from the doorway.
Is childcare available?
Yes, we offer childcare every Sunday, year-round during worship. [Learn More]
Do you have Sunday Classes for children and youth?
Sunday classes for Youth are offered regularly from after Labor Day through May. Check the Calendar and the weekly email from us for summer programing.
What should I wear to Meeting for Worship?
Dress comfortably. In general, Quakers wear casual clothes to Meeting. This may range from business casual to jeans and a T-shirt. Come as you are and worship with us.
Where is Gwynedd Meeting?
We are located across from the William Penn Inn on the corner of Sumneytown Pike and Rt. 202, 1101 DeKalb Pike, Gwynedd, Pa. 19454.
Who do I contact if I want to visit and get more information about Gwynedd Meeting?
If you want to speak to someone first, our phone number is 215-699-3055. We do not have full-time office staff, but your calls will be returned. The Meeting’s email address is office@gwyneddmeeting.org.
Will there be a collection during worship?
Quakers do not ask for money during the worship. We have the same financial need for funds as other faiths, even more because of our old Meetinghouse and Schoolhouse. Our members and attenders are asked to donate voluntarily according to their ability. Donations can be made through several ways; Gwynedd has a locked box in the lobby outside the office for donations of cash or check. You can also donate with your credit card on our website. [Make a Donation]
How do Quakers get things done without a paid ministry?
The short answer is that volunteers on committees meet the spiritual, practical, and social needs of the community as well as the practice of our testimonies.
